Designing spatial processes

Urban and regional development is a joint task of public, private and civil society actors. The aim is to create sustainable spatial qualities that people can experience. On the one hand, this requires a high level of design competence and the understanding of the configuration and use of space. On the other hand, we need to design the paths to achieving this in a high-quality manner. This concerns the joint processes of problem identification, conception and development as well as decision making and implementation. The improved linking of spaces and processes is a key to the sustainable design of our environment.

Linking content and processes

We consider teaching, research and consulting in conjunction with content- and process-related questions of urban development. Innovative management approaches and methods for spatial development are essential focal points in research, teaching and practice. These are closely related to global challenges of urban and spatial development. Mobility, housing and cohabitation, health, resource efficiency and climate change mitigation and adaptation are key topics of urbanization that call for a transdisciplinary approach. In addition to the thematic interfaces, the coordination of different actors with their respective areas of competence and operating logic represents a central challenge.

Conceptual models

Research and development of spatial processes requires a conceptual level. We use and develop conceptual models to describe, structure and delimit the object of investigation and design. They give face to complex processes of urban development for conducting research in the field, and play an active role in shaping them. At the same time, models and associated notions are an essential basis for entering into a dialogue in research and practice - within and between different disciplines.

Studies: understand – design – control

In teaching, we combine three interconnected perspectives: the imparting of reflexive, analytical competences and scientific fundamentals, the development of spatial concepts and strategies, and the design and management of spatial processes with appropriate methods, instruments, and process architectures. The focus is on understanding different spatial scales from neighbourhood to region, time frames, actors, methods, and instruments. Projects are offered in close dialogue with professionals.

Our classes are aimed at prospective architects and urban planners in the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Architecture and in the Master's programs in Urban Planning and Transforming City Regions. Students of Geography can elect classes in the Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Urban Planning programs according to their respective study regulations.
